Although Wales is a small country covering just over 8,000 square miles (20,779 square km) it has 188 mountains that are over 2000 feet (approx. 600m) and have a prominence of at least 98 feet (30m). These are known as Hewitts (Hills in England, Wales and Ireland over Two Thousand feet).
This mountainous country has higher peaks in the north and central areas, particularly around Snowdon ( Yr Wyddfa) , the highest peak in Wales at 3,560 feet (1,085m) . The 15 mountains that have peaks over 3,000 feet (910m) in elevation are known as the Welsh 3000s and are in Northwest Wales. In South Wales, the highest peak is Pen y Fan at 2,907 feet (886m) in the Brecon Beacons. There are more hiking challenges in the Cambrian Mountains in mid-Wales, including Pumlumon at 2,467 feet (752m).
There are many ways of calculating the highest mountains in Wales, besides Hewitts. Nuttalls are high points that have a prominence of 49 feet (15m) above their surrounding landscape. However, these 190 Welsh peaks include many insignificant minor bumps that most people do not regard as mountains. Marilyns are more defined mountains as they are summits with a drop of at least 492 feet (150m) in all directions.
For simplicity, we outline details of the top 5 highest peaks by elevation that have a prominence of over 98 feet (30m) from their surroundings.

1. Snowdon (Yr Wyddfa)
Located in the Snowdonia National Park in Gwynedd, Snowdon is a must-do for hill walkers as it is the highest mountain in Wales at 3,560 feet (1085m). It is also a National Nature Reserve with rarer flora and fauna on its slopes. Over 582,000 visitors climb Snowdon each year, making it one of the most visited attractions in Wales. The ascent can be achieved in less than 3 hours (one way) for anyone at peak fitness opting for the shortest route.
Most routes start from Pen-y-Pass where there is limited parking (£10 fee), a café and toilets. There are pay-and-display laybys along the A498 and free parking across the Nant Gwyrd River in Conwy County. For an early start, stay overnight at the Youth Hostel at Pen-y-Pass.
When you reach Snowdon summit, the Hafod Eryri Café is open from late spring to October. If you have non-walking companions, or need backup, there is a Sherpa bus and the Snowdon Mountain Railway which runs 4.7 miles to the summit from Llanberis Station from spring to late autumn.
Routes to climb up Snowdon
There are many routes up Snowdon. One of the most scenic is Snowdon Horseshoe Scramble. This classic 5-mile circular hike takes 8 hours to complete and does require a head for heights. It starts from Pen-y-Pass, circumnavigates Lyn Llydaw and Glaslyn lakes and includes a scramble over Crib Goch. Continue down over Y Lliwedd enjoying amazing views and exhilarating experiences along the way.
The shortest walk up Snowdon is along the 3-mile PYG Track from Pen-y-Pass and takes three hours each way. It runs along the north side of Llyn Llydaw.
The shallowest gradient is on the 9-mile Llanberis Path, which is also the longest route. It follows the line of the railway. However, it is not suitable for walking in winter due to the treacherous area known as the Killer Convex.
2. Garnedd Ugain (Crib-y-Ddysgl)
Part of the Snowdon Massif, Garnedd Ugain is often known as Crib-y-Ddysgl. It is about ½ mile north of Snowdon summit and is 3,494 feet (1065m).
Routes to climb up Garnedd Ugain
If you follow the Snowdon Horseshoe route, you will pass Garnedd Ugain as it is linked to Snowdon summit via the col at Bwlch Glas.
The most popular route up Garnedd Ugain starts from Pen y Pass as with the Snowdon climb. From the Pyg Trail, take the right fork after about one mile. The Pyg Trail is 3 miles each way and takes around 3 hours. Alternatively, follow the Miner’s Track which runs beside Llyn Llydaw. This 3.7 mile trail takes around 4 hours each way.
3. Carnedd Llewelyn
Named after Prince Llewellyn, Carnedd Llewellyn is the highest point of the Carneddau range in Snowdonia, Northwest Wales at 3,491 feet (1064 m). Located between Carnedd Dafydd and Foel Grach, any ascent of Carnedd Llewellyn involves a long slow walk. Many climbers regard this as the most difficult ascent in the British Isles.
The summit is a flat plateau covered in rough boulders. The southern gullies attract snow accumulations that linger year round. Carnedd Llewellyn summit is surrounded by cliffs for climbing including the “Black Ladders” of Ysgolion Duon and Craig yr Ysfa.
Routes to climb up Cardnedd Llewelyn
The recommended route up Carnedd Llewellyn is a 10-mile circuit starting and finishing at Glan Denau on the A5 (on-road parking available) near Llyn Ogwen. Take the track to the reservoir then follow the slopes above Craig yr Ysfr to the top. Allow 6-7 hours and expect some scrambling in places.
The alternative horseshoe route is via Craig yr Ysfa and Cwm Llugwy which includes a short and easier scramble than the above route.
4. Carnedd Dafydd
Situated on the main ridge of the Carneddau range, Carnedd Dafydd has a flat summit and an average annual temperature of 3-4°C. Reaching 3,425 feet (1044m), it is named after Dafydd, younger brother of Prince Llewellyn.
Routes to climb up Carnedd Dafydd
The usual route up Carnedd Dafydd is from Pen yr Ole Wen, following the ridge to the summit.
Carnedd Dafydd can also be ascended from Tal y Llyn Ogwen. Follow the stream to Ffynnon Lloer Lake and head to the summit.
5. Glyder Fawr
Glyder Fawr is the highest peak in the Glyderau range, Glyder meaning “pile of stones”. It offers breathtaking views of the surrounding peaks from the summit. Most maps show it as 3279 feet (999m) high, but a resurvey in 2010 showed it was actually 3,283 feet (1000m).
Routes to climb up Glyder Fawr
The best route is the circular traverse over the main summits of Y Garn, Glyderau and Tryfan. Start from Ogwen Cottage Car Park where there is a Visitor Centre with snacks and toilets. The 7-mile trip takes 6-8 hours, depending on conditions and fitness levels. This hike includes steep slopes and scrambles and there is scree on the ascent of Glyder Fawr.
Another approach is from Pen-y-Pass, approaching up the south flank. It can also be reached from Glyder Fach, to the east, along the ridge which is fairly level and easy.
