The Lake District

England’s largest National Park is arguably its most dramatic and stunning one, recognised by it’s recent awarding of World Heritage status. It is home to England’s highest mountain - Scafell Pike - and it’s deepest lake (Wastwater), as well as bustling local towns like Keswick (home to the Mountain Film Festival each year).
Covering an impressive 912 square miles it is the largest National Park in England, and also the most popular, boasting over 16 million visitors a year. And with very good reason! If you’re looking for things to do in beautiful surroundings you’d be hard pushed to beat the Lake District.

What are the cycle routes in the Lake District?

There are so many iconic and stunning routes in the Lake District, and it seems an injustice to narrow it down to a few, but the list below are some of our favourites, alongside some of the more popular ones. • Lakeland Loop, 40 miles - voted Best Ride in Britain by Cycling Plus magazine, so it had to be included! This is a route that has it all - the grandeur of the Lake District backdrop, quiet roads, some long gentle descending, and a full on cycling challenge in Wrynose Pass! Starting and finishing in Lowick it begins alongside the lake shore of Coniston Water, followed by a climb up Hawkshead Hill and then quiet lanes to Little Langdale. Brace yourself, as you’ve then got Wrynose Pass, at a whopping 30% incline! Then take a breather with some gentle descending to Brougthon in Furness, enjoy a cafe break before a final ascent up Woodland Fell and then downhill back to Lowick.
  • Derwentwater & Borrowdale, 10.2 miles: a shorter ride that makes for a great family option. Starting at Swinside, the road the meanders through the valley with great views of the lake and Borrowdale, before a mostly flat and fast section back towards Keswick. From Keswick you’ll join the National Cycle Network route 71 in the climb back to Swinside.
  • Grizedale and Whinlatter Forests: for keen mountain bikers these are the places to head! Featuring multiple man-made trails for all levels you’ll find some fantastic single-track biking here to put a smile on your face (and an ache in your legs)!

Red routes are graded as ‘hard’ with some steep elevation, drop-offs, bigger rocks with varying terrain types and water crossings, with a good level of stamina required. Cycling, Biking and Backpacking Adventure Holidays

A relatively new multi-day adventure activity has arisen - bikepacking. Bikepacking has become increasingly popular as a means of touring areas with bikes, whilst carrying all your kit, being self-sufficient. Often with camping in between, it’s a great way to see a larger area over walking and still feeling the sense of adventure. Alternatively, get back to basics with normal road bikes (or e-bikes for those who want to take it easier). Mountain Biking Adventure Weekends are also a great way to get more remote than road cycling and pick up new skills.
