Best Hidden Gems In the UK to Explore

These are some of our own personal favourites that might not make a more mainstream ‘highlights’ reel of the UK. As they are so personal we’re likely to be missing some cracking alternatives, so please feel free to let us know what you think should be added and why!

The Roaches, Peak District National Park

Located on the very south western edge of the Peak District, the Roaches is a stunning gritstone ridge with far reaching views, and offers superb walking and climbing. It’s also home to it’s very own myths and legends too, with Doxey Pool and it’s very own mermaid (or Blue Nyph) ready to pull in unsuspecting passers-by, and the truly surprising Lud’s Church, a deep moss-filled chasm completely hidden until you stumble across it.
Outdoor activities things to do in UK

Brecon Beacons, Wales

Not that ‘hidden’ perhaps, but certainly playing second-fiddle to it’s more famous Welsh landscapes of Snowdonia and Pembrokeshire. The Brecons though have a certain wildness to them that should not be underestimated, with some rugged peaks combining with some stunning hidden valleys and waterfalls.

Seven Sisters, East Sussex

Another one hiding in plain sight, the Seven Sisters is perhaps overlooked by many simply because it’s fairly accessible, pretty close to London, and can get busy. But therein lies it’s appeal - it’s a genuinely spectacular coastal landscape, all the more amazing that it’s within an easy day trip of the Capital.

Peak District Caverns, Peak District National Park

Perhaps not top of mind when looking at things to do and places to go, but some of the most stunning landscapes in the Peak District are in fact under your feet! With several ‘show’ caves such as Speedwell Cavern, Treak Cliff Cavern and Blue John Cavern, if you want to take things up a notch you can also book a caving guide and explore some of the smaller and less well known underground networks for a truly memorable experience.

Oban, Scotland

Not many would associate the UK with exotic wildlife or large wild animals, but they’d be missing a trick! Whilst that may be largely true on land, it’s offshore that we come into our own, with the world’s second largest fish regularly gracing our shores. Head to Oban, a stunning landscape in it’s own right, and take a tour to swim with Basking Sharks and hopefully spot some other wildlife in the process, including dolphins, seals and maybe even whales. Crantock Beach, Newquay, Cornwall

And now for something very local. This makes our list for the fact it’s such a lovely surprise. Newquay is an activity mecca, and home to some very busy beaches and overlooked by a busy town. But just a few minutes walk out of the town centre and the other side of the Pentire Headland is an incredibly beautiful estuary and beach, with an almost tropical feel to it’s steeply-sided backdrop, and a footbridge or ferry to get you to the beaches lining the estuary on the other side.
We could go on all day about the sheer number and variety of other places to visit, so explore the activities below and see what interests you. Happy hunting!
