Bristol

With its docks, hills, river, parks and vibrant cultural offering Bristol packs an awful lot into a relatively small space! If music and theatre are your bag there’s plenty on offer, whilst those wanting to learn a thing or two about craft beer are well served by many small breweries offering tours and tastings. Despite (or maybe because of!) its hills, Bristol is the UK’s first ‘cycling city’ and once you’re off the roads it’s easy to see why, with the magnificent Downs parks, the wooded trails at Ashton Court, and the fantastic Bristol to Bath Railway Path. The docks lend themselves to various watersports too, alongside the many bars surrounding them, meaning there’s a little something for everyone in Bristol!

Climbing in Bristol

With crags, gorges and quarries Bristol packs an awful lot of climbing routes into a relatively small space! In addition to a great variety of indoor climbing walls, Bristol has almost 3000 climbing routes packed into the wider city area. In the immediate city area there’s the Avon Gorge, which offers fantastic climbs of up to 80m within minutes of leaving the city itself. Close by climbers also have the picturesque valleys of the River Trym and River Frome, whilst slightly further afield Cheddar Gorge - the largest gorge in the UK - is home to one of the country’s most famous climbs (Coronation Street), and there’s some great sea cliff climbing between tides at the cliffs between Portishead and Brean Down. Guiding and instruction are available.

Kayaking, Canoeing and SUP in Bristol

The City Docks play host to a huge range of watersports activities, with kayaking and canoeing featured prominently. The nearby River Avon also providers plenty of opportunity for a leisurely paddle in a more rural environment just a short distance outside the city centre.
