Highlights
Our Four Seasons Bush Craft Club for children aged 4-10 years of age will be starting back up again for 2022 based in the village of Wanlockhead. We'll be meeting 4 times over the year to gather and take part in seasonal bush craft activities to help children grow and develop their outdoor skills and love of nature. The sessions will be as follows: Sat 28th May. Spring Session: The children will gather and learn how to risk assess an area before setting up camp, then look at setting up fire areas, hammocks, work areas. We'll look at the site, local history, animals and plants and harvest some of the spring flowers to make syrups over the fire. We'll practice fire lighting and introduce some simple whittling when we whittle marshmallow sticks for the fire. If we are blessed with warm water there is a burn for water play and we'll make some small boats for racing. Sat 30th July. Summer Session: After our site set up we'll harvest local rosehips for syrup making, hone our firelighting skills, learn about the history of bows and arrows and then learn how to make some simple bows and arrows with traditional methods and targets. We'll play some woodland games and lots of summer water play in the burn. Sat 29th October. Autumn Session: Following site setup we'll look at local fungi and learn about historical uses. We'll set up a work area for making kazoos where we'll saw, split and whittle the wood. We'll fire light and make some warming Autumnal jam over the fire with scones and finish the session with woodland games. Saturday 17th December, Winter Session: Set up and then Winter Survival session, making dens, wind breaks, fire lighting sticks, Christmas decorations making around our warm fire and winter soups and s'mores followed by woodland games and free play. All sessions run from 11-2pm and we will meet at the Wanlockhead Community centre to take the short walk to the woodland site at 11am.
