A Sustainable Woodland Experience - Coppicing & Charcoal

  • Location New Forest
  • Price from £45.00

Highlights

Enjoy a unique New Forest experience. You will be met by our Woodland Managers for a short five minute walk to the historic 200 acre Pondhead Wood. Along the way you'll receive some historical facts about the New Forest and its centuries old system of management. Upon arrival at the woodland you will be taken on a meandering 2 mile walk. As you wind your way through this ancient wood you'll learn about the different tree species and woodland plants. You'll also hear how this area was once at the centre of a Royal Deer Park within the New Forest where Kings and Queens of England used to ride out to hunt the "beasts of the chase". The woodland is part deciduous and part coppiced hazel - you will learn how both areas are managed for the benefit of its overall biodiversity and public enjoyment. Your walk will be at a gentle pace with stops along the way for us to impart information and allow time for any questions you may have. The end of the walk and its highlight will be a visit to our charcoal kiln which will be fired up and  operating (weather permitting). It's here that you will be given a lunch of locally produced sausages and burgers cooked over our own charcoal. Over lunch you will learn about the long history of charcoal burners in the New Forest. Children will be provided with our artist charcoal to show off their drawing skills and they can try their hand at some leaf rubbings. Don't forget to bring your camera as there will be plenty of photo opportunities.

National Park Experiences is a curated collection that brings the stories of our National Parks to life. Each experience offers an authentic insight into the landscape and special qualities of a National Park.

Meeting Point:  War Memorial at the entrance to Bolton's Bench Car Park, Beaulieu Road, Lyndhurst (there are bus stops within 100 metres)
