Atlas Mountains - Mount Toubkal Winter Ascent

  • Location Morrocco
  • Price from £800.00

Highlights

Join this Mount Toubkal (4167m) expedition over 8 days, to give you the chance to become fully immersed in the culture, learn key mountaineering skills and experience Morrocco and the impressive Atlas Mountain Range at it’s finest! Everything is taken care of during the trip, with in-country transport from day 2, most food, equipment (ice axes, crampons and helmets) and of course passionate guides. This trip is perfect for those looking to spend more time in the area and have the benefit from both a highly experienced English Mountain Leader and local guides and porters, to get the perfect mix of an awesome experience with plenty of culture! The Atlas Mountain range extends across northwestern Africa with diverse wildlife, climates and scenery. Mount Toubkal stands as the highest mountain in the Atlas Mountains and in North Africa and of course, Morocco, the country in which it’s situated in. In the winter the experience becomes even more breath-taking. Not just because of the added difficulty of deep snow to tackle, but also because it offers incredible views of the Atlas Mountains, oh and epic photo opportunities. It’s a relatively tough hike, you may be exposed to snow, high winds and ice, so you’ll have to have good health, be an active individual and of course, have a sprinkling of determination and enthusiasm!

Day 1

You’ll who join us in Marrakech, the historic Capital city of the Berber tribes people of North Africa. You’ll meet the rest of the team at the hotel in the middle of the Medina (walled heart of the City). We’ll have a welcome briefing and a chance to get to know each other, before heading straight out into the bustle of the Jemaa el-Fnaa, the main square of the City. Every direction you turn, you’ll be amazed by the richness of the Moroccan culture and overwhelmed with amazing street food!

Day 2

After breakfast we’ll transfer by private bus to the high mountain town of Imlil, on the northern slopes of the High Atlas Mountains. From here we will trek to our base camp (Gite) in the village of Arumd, this is a small Berber village, so participants will get a chance to see how these people live, trek through the walnut and cherry groves to our accommodation. Here we’ll do our final kit checks and find out more about the epic adventure that is to come.

Day 3

The next couple of days will allow you to acclimatise and learn the skills required to operate in the high mountains in winter conditions, including using ice axes and crampons. Dependent on weather and conditions we will most likely undertake a local Trek to acclimatise and get used to moving on the terrain. We will stay at Gite tonight and can share stories, learn more about Morocco and hear about living in the mountains by our local guides and crew!

Day 4

The plan for today is to trek up the Toubkal valley to the Nelther Refuge (Mt Toubkal Base Camp). After breakfast we’ll pack our gear and prepare for the approximately 5 hr trek. Initially this will be on a good path which gently climbs up the valley, but once we meet the snow line we may need to change into our crampons for the last section up the mountain hut. If there is time (and energy) we will undertake a short ice training and familiarisation session, and spend the night in the hut. Our Crew will assist in carrying a lot of our kit and preparing all our food in the hut, where you will meet other climbers and exchange stories!

Day 5

Depending on the conditions today's plan is to undertake an Acclimatisation trek up above 4000m, where you will put your Ice & Snow Training to good use, hopefully we should get a good view from the pass south into the Sahara Desert! Tonight will be an early one, as we will be rising early for our summit bid!

Day 6

Summit Day! An early start today, and after a quick breakfast we leave the hut to begin the ascent. The trek will be on snow and ice as we climb towards the South Col initially and then up to the Summit. The summit should hopefully be reached early enough to get an amazing view and after the celebrations and photos we head back down to the hut for a rest and to re-fuel over lunch! When the team are ready we will leave the hut to descend back down to Arumd and our Gite. Usually participants spend the rest of the day sorting kit, resting and talking about their experience.

Day 7

After a short lay-in and breakfast we have the chance to have a wander around the village, meet Berber tribes people and see how they live, there is also a chance here to buy any gifts or presents as well as the obligatory summit t-shirt and know that your money is going back into the local mountain communities. After lunch we trek back down to Imlil and meet our bus for the return to Marrakech, where the team can spend the afternoon exploring the famous Souks. This evening is usually finished off with a team meal at a roof-top restaurant with views over the souks and main square!

Day 8

The last meal of the trip is this mornings breakfast, following this you can either travel on or depart for their journey home, leaving this amazing country more knowledgeable, flushed with personal success and having been part of a great team. This is an ultimate adventure that will stay with you forever.
