The aim of our expeditions are to learn and develop expedition and mountain skills in the iconic Lake District National Park! This expedition is designed to equip you with a range of essential expedition and mountain skills to enable you to plan and execute your own solo or group expeditions. During the expedition you will complete a number of training exercises, all whilst trekking through the incredible wild landscape set within breathtakingly rugged mountain scenery. On the second night of the expedition you will pitch up in a remote corner of the mountains and wild camp! Training objectives:
  • Introduction to mountains and expedition
  • Navigation (Day & Night): Using a compass and mapping, taking bearings, use of pacing & timings.
  • Moving on steep ground: working with ropes
  • Camp craft: using tents, stoves & camp safety
  • Managing a team and expedition leadership
  • Expedition & route planning: including the use of route cards
  • Assessing risk: dynamic and formal

Day 1

Team members arrive in Wasdale the Friday evening the designated hostel (exact hostel will be confirmed in your detailed itinerary) where the expedition officially begins. On arrival you will be greeted by your expedition leader and shown to your accommodation for the night. Once all members of the team have arrived, your expedition leader will deliver an expedition brief and talk you through the plan for the next couple of days.

Day 2

On Saturday morning we are up and about! Following breakfast we leave the hostel and after a very short drive to our start point, we begin on foot. After moving along the shores of Wastwater we begin to move into the mountains where you learn how to manage and move on steep ground. Following this you will continue to trek into the mountains and begin to practise your essential navigational skills, making use of your map and compass along with utilising skills which include; taking bearings, pacing and the use of timings. That evening we will set up camp in a remote part of this wild landscape. Wild camping in such an untamed and striking surrounding is the perfect environment in which to truly immerse yourself in adventure! You will learn essential camp craft skills to streamline your efficiency within such an environment, as well as discuss essential expedition and mountains skills which include team management and leadership styles. Finally that evening you will learn more about expedition and route planning as well as how best to conduct dynamic and formal risk assessments.

Day 3

The following morning, energised having spent the night camping wild you will pack away your wild camp and begin to navigate your way out of the mountains. Along the way you will action your navigational skills whilst making use of a route card and drawing upon your team management & leadership skills whilst continuously conducting dynamic risk assessments! After an arduous but utterly rewarding weekend in the mountains, you did it! Inspired by your new or refined skill you are now back at the shores of Wastwater where the expedition officially ends.
