Everest Base Camp trek

  • Location Kathmandu, Nepal
  • Price from £1,295.00

Highlights

Trekking up to the most iconic base camp of them all, at the foot of the greatest mountains in the world... Mount Everest (8848m). This is one of the worlds classic treks. Walking through Sherpa country, past cultivated fields and small villages. We will have time to acclimatize before reaching spectacular high altitude scenery: the incredible monastery at Thyangboche, views of Ama Dablam, Everest and other Himalayan peaks. As well as reaching Base camp, we will have the opportunity to Kala Patar (5545 m) for a magnificent view of the highest mountain top in the world. You'll have a full support team of local English speaking guides as well a crew of porter and cooks who will tender to your every need and help to ensure you have the very best experience possible.

Day 1

Upon our arrival at the International Airport in Kathmandu, you will be warmly greeted by the Mountain Adventure Team and then we will be then escorted to your Hotel. After checking and settling down, depending on the time of your arrival, you may take an outing around the impressive locale of Thamel, a popular tourist junction in Kathmandu. You could be spending hours strolling around the narrow streets of this tourist magnet filled with colour, chaos, charms, and chimes and not be at all aware of it. Perhaps, some rickshaw riding and some antique shopping while you are at it. In the evening, there will be a welcome dinner at an authentic Nepalese restaurant for dinner, you will be served excellent Nepalese cuisine which will introduce you to the Nepalese food culture. But, in case of late arrival, the dinner will be postponed to a later date.

Day 2

Phakding Fly from Kathmandu to Lukla (2840m) and trek to Phakding (2610m): 35 mins flight & approx. 3hrs walk. After breakfast, we will be escorted to the domestic terminal of Kathmandu airport for an early morning flight to Lukla (2,800m), a gateway destination from where our trek begins. After an adventurous 35-minute flight above the breathtaking green and white mountains, we reach the Tenzing-Hillary Airport at Lukla. This is one of the most beautiful air routes in the world climaxing in a dramatic landing on a hillside surrounded by high mountains peaks. Upon arrival at Lukla, we meet our other crew members and after some packing and arrangements, we start our trek through the prosperous village of Lukla until we reach Phakding.

Day 3

Phakding to Namche Bazaar (3440m): approx. 6hrs walk Walking through a beautiful pine forest, the track leads us along the Dudh Koshi River through many suspension bridges, one of which is the famous Hillary Suspension Bridge. First, we catch wonderful prospect of the glistening Mt. Thamserku (6618 m). Through the settlement of Benkar, Chumoa, Monjo, we come to the check post and entrance to Sagarmatha National Park. We pass through the last village of Jorsale before reaching Namche Bazaar. The trail climbs through the forests and bridges until we reach the confluence of the Dudh Koshi and Bhote Koshi rivers. After a final steep ascent of about two hours, we get first sight of Mt. Everest peering over the Lhotse-Nuptse ridge. Upon this juncture, we stop at Chautara to admire the view. We still need to hike about 1.5 hours to reach Namche Bazaar, a gateway to Mt. Everest and main trading center of this region. Overnight in Namche Bazaar. Included meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 4

This is the scheduled ‘acclimatisation’ day for this trek. It is recommended to stay active and moving during the rest day too instead of being idle for proper acclimatisation. We either spend the day taking a day hike to Thame or visiting Khunde or relaxing and exploring Namche Bazaar itself. Namche Bazaar, the main centre of the Everest (Khumbu) region, offers many ways to spend a day. You will have enough time to visit the National Park Head Office, museum, and other monasteries. It also has internet cafes, shops, restaurants, bakeries, and a colourful market each Friday evening and Saturday, where you could easily spend hours relaxing and strolling. Our guides take us to the Tourist Visitor Centre near the headquarter of the Sagarmatha National Park where we can observe an assortment of things related to the first Everest ascenders, Sherpa culture and learn about the various plant and animal life of the Everest region. We also take an interesting side trip up to Khumjung. We further climb up to the famous airstrip at Syangboche. Just above the airstrip will be the Everest View Hotel, a Japanese scheme to build a deluxe hotel with great views of the highest mountains on Earth. The Khumjung valley is surrounded by the snowy peaks of Kongde and Thamserku and the sacred peak Khumbila, hosts a well-known monastery that houses a yeti scalp. We also visit Hillary School which is located at the same site. After having lunch and spending some time in Khumjung, we walk back down to Namche Bazaar. Overnight in Namche Bazaar. Included meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 5

Namche Bazaar to Deboche (3820m) via Tengboche (3860m): approx. 6 hrs walk. The walk to Deboche is one of the most spectacular trekking days in Nepal. The trail meanders easily around the ridges and Everest can be clearly seen on the horizon ahead before we descend through splendid rhododendron forests for lunch. After lunch, we cross the Dudh Kosi and begin the ascent to the top of a long ridge which flows from the summit of Kantega. The trail takes us through pine and rhododendron forest, and, as this is a devout Buddhist region, the wildlife is unharmed and not too shy. As a result, there is a possibility that we may see Himalayan Thar, Musked Deer or pheasants in the forest and around the area. As we approach the ridgeline we pass through a traditional gateway and around a chorten before cresting the ridge onto a wide grassy meadow at the monastery village of Tengboche. Tengboche is a great place for close up views of Ama-Dablam, Nuptse, and Everest and it has the biggest Buddhist Monastery all over in Khumbu region. The monastery was re-built with the assistance of Sir Edmund Hillary after it was destroyed by fire in 1989. We pay our visit to the monastery to witness the ceremony in the principal and popular monastery of Everest region. The views of the Everest massif, as well as all the other major peaks of the area are astounding. After a rest and visit to the monastery, we head downhill towards Deboche. Overnight in Deboche. Included meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 6

Deboche to Dingboche (4410m): approx. 6 hrs walk. This morning we begin a steady ascent. The stunning views of Everest, Lhotse, Kantega, Thamserku, Ama Dablam and Nuptse are spectacular throughout our walk today. We head down to cross the Imja Khola before an easy climb along a wide, open trail to the small village of Pangboche (4000m). We may take a slight detour to visit the Pangboche Gompa – the oldest monastary (around 300 years old) in the Khumbu Region. We cross the river again and then gradually trek up to Dingboche, situated just beneath the impressive Ama Dablam. On arrival at Dingboche, we will see a beautiful array of fields enclosed by stone walls to protect barley, buckwheat and potatoes from the cold winds and grazing animals. Overnight in Dingboche. Included meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 7

A full rest day is well recommended in order to avoid AMS (Altitude Mountain Sickness). This is the final acclimatization day before we make our way up to the Mt. Everest Base Camp. Dingboche is a beautiful place which offers a magnificent view of Mt. Ama Dablam, Mt. Lhotse and numerous other peaks from the ridge on the north behind the village. You can also observe the Imja River that flows directly east of the village. Another interesting thing about this village is, the length of stone walls that cover the entire valley of Imja. You will also be surprised to see an internet café and one of the world’s highest billiard parlors. Therefore, this place offers some of the best options to spend your day. While you are here, you may also choose to hike to Chukkung which will reward you with some great views of the valley. Overnight in Dingboche. Included meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 8

Dingboche to Lobuche (4910m): approx. 6 hrs walk. As soon as we have our breakfast we begin the walk towards Dughla all the way through the Khumbu Khola valley. We then make our way through Dusa and Phulong Karpo. The trail gives you a wonderful opportunity to enjoy Chola Lake and experience the breathtaking view of Mt. Pumori which eventually vanishes when the trail goes down and takes a bend across the stream. From here the trail mounts to Dughla. On reaching Dughla, we scale up the steep terminal moraine of the Khumbu Glacier. Here you can see the memorials of those Sherpas who passed away on the glacier of Mt. Everest on the way to Expedition to the summit; Scott Fischer (American Mountaineer) and 10 times Everest summiteer Babu Chiri Sherpa (Nepali mountain guide) are among them. You can also enjoy the great view of some of the other peaks like Pumori, Mahalangur Himal, Khumbutse, and Lingtren. We are now in the vicinity of Everest but the great mountain still remains elusive. As you pass along a whispering stream leaving the Khumbu Glacier behind and hike up to Lobuche, you may begin to feel a little out of breath due to high altitude. Overnight in Lobuche. Included meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 9

Lobuche to Everest Base Camp (5364m) via Gorak Shep (5140m): approx. 7 hrs walk. Soon after breakfast, without wasting any more time we hike towards Gorak Shep. The sheer excitement of finally reaching your destination is sure to fuel your strength today. On reaching Gorak Shep, we check into the lodge have lunch and then continue to hike up to the Everest Base Camp. We pass the pyramid sign from where you get an opportunity to see the top of the north ridge of Mt. Everest along with Mt. Mahalangur, Mt. Lingtern, Mt. Khumbutse, Mt. Pumori, and Mt. Nuptse. A small ascent from here leads you to Thangma Riju, a place that allows you to experience 360-degree landscape of the hoary mountains. We climb further up to the top through the torrent of Changri Glacier in order to get a quick glimpse of Kala Pattar (Black Rock), beneath Mt. Pumori. Struggling your way up through this rock and glacial trail eventually leads you to your destination — the Everest Base Camp. You can spend some time taking pictures and appreciating the beauty offered by Mt. Everest and her sibling peaks. Nuptse, Khumbuste, and Pumori are the mountains we can view from the base camp. Mountaineer’s tents stand out in bright colors against the dullness of gray surroundings (especially in the Spring). At the latter half of the day trek back to Gorakshep for the overnight stay. Overnight in Gorak Shep. Included meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 10

Gorakshep to Kala Patthar (5550m) to Upper Pangboche (4000m) via Pheriche (4240m): approx. 8 hrs walk. Today is the climax of our trip and our goal today is to watch the view of sunrise in the Himalayas from Kalapatthar before we start our descend. This is an optional side trip and those who feel ready and able, will wake up very early (around 4:00am) and hike up Kalapaltthar to see the sunrise over Everest. For those who don’t feel like taking this strenuous morning hike can stay back at the teahouse and spend the morning leisurely and have a late breakfast. This is a difficult 3 hour up-hill hike which is very hard work because of the sheer cold and with your body demanding more oxygen, but well worth it for the amazing sunrise views from one of the most astonishing panoramas on earth. Besides the breathtaking views of Mt. Everest, Nuptse, Lhotse, Pumori and Ama Dablam are the other peaks you will be able to view from up here. This view of the glowing mountains when the first rays of sun strikes the peaks is nothing less than a feast to behold. One does get a feeling of how humbling it is and what a privilege it is to experience something so magnificent. We spend some time appreciating the beauty and taking the picture of the magnificent views of the soaring mountain. After that we hike back to Gorakshep, have a huge breakfast to replenish the energy and descend towards Upper Pangboche through Pheriche. The hike down will be much easier and you should feel more oxygen filling up your lungs even before you reach Pheriche. We make a small pit stop for lunch either at Lobuche where you camped a night before or further down at Dughla. As we continue further down it becomes so much easier to enjoy the beautiful landscape without having to worry about running out of breath. We cross a small bridge close to Dughla and walk further down to Pheriche. In front of you is the gigantic Taboche, a stone-wall like mountain with icy peaks on the top. After reaching the valley, the path levels and becomes more or less a straight path towards Pheriche. The landscape becomes more versatile now compared to what it was an hour ago. Small bushes and berries cover the terrain as you follow the small stream. Pheriche is the last inhabited village below Mt. Everest. The Himalayan Rescue Association operates a medical post here and western doctors conduct seminars on Altitude Mountain Sickness (AMS) most afternoons. This place is used by many trekkers for overnight stay on the way down from EBC trek, but the constant icy, penetrating wind makes it a bit unfavorable and unpleasant for some. From Pheriche we make our way to Upper Pangboche. The path leads us through the valley, always in view is the majestic Ama Dablam. We descend into a small canyon and on the opposite side up again. About serpentines, it goes on up. The view is amazing. Just before we reach Upper Pangboche, we have a great view of the trek to the Ama Dablam Base Camp where we stood a week ago. The path soon brings us across the riverbed. You will notice that the landscape has changed extremely. Instead of the stone desert, there is vegetation again. A few minutes ahead is Upper Pangboche and like all the villages in the area, it consists of only a few houses. By the time you reach your predestined lodge, you will be pretty exhausted from the very long day’s trek, but that won’t stop you from enjoying the views, the oxygen-rich air and not to mention warm bed and hot shower. Overnight in Upper Pangboche. Included meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 11

Upper Pangboche to Namche Bazaar via Phortse (3810m): approx. 6hrs walk We will be taking an alternative route to Namche bazaar today, avoiding the old trail we walked on our way up. The standard Everest Base Camp itinerary may be a there-and-back linear route but we don’t have to take exactly the same trail on the return trip. A little-used trail on the northern side of the Dudh Kosi valley links the charming villages of Pangboche and Phortse, while offering uncrowded views of Tengboche Monastery en route. Fairly well rested the night before, today we will wake up rejuvenated and relaxed and ready to make the descend toward Phortse. But, before that, we visit the old Gompa (Monastery) in the village which is thought to be one of the oldest in the Khumbu region where you get a chance to see the replica yeti hand (the original was stolen in a convoluted plot involving mountaineer Peter Byrne and the actor James Stewart) After viewing this Gompa we follow the trail to Phortse. The trail follows the side of the hill and climbs up and down often making steep ascents and descents on stone staircases some of which are quite steep. As you skirt the hill you can see below the lodges of Deboche which you passed on the way up to the EBC. Further south the monastery of Tengboche stands on top of a hill below the high route. This trail has brilliant views of Ama Dablam, Melangphulang, Kangtega, and Thamserku and to the north Everest and Lhotse as well. The trail finally climbs to a small chorten from where the village of Phortse lies below. It takes a couple of hours to reach Phortse, and Himalayan Tahr and other wildlife may be seen en route as well as around the village. Phortse is a traditional Sherpa village is least crowded by trekkers and lies between the routes up the valleys to EBC and Gokyo. Silver birch and rhododendron forests surround it. From Phortse we descend to cross the Dudh Koshi to Phortse Tenga and head south to descend to Namche Bazaar. Overnight in Namche Bazaar. Included meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 12

Namche Bazaar to Lukla: approx. 7 hrs walk. The trail descends steeply downward so we need to walk slowly and under control as our shaky legs continuously battle the rocky terrain. After crossing the suspension bridges over the fast flowing Dudh Koshi and its tributaries the trail becomes more level and natural. By today, we start to get warmed up by the light breeze. Any remaining sore throats and colds will be gone by today as we pass through this charming mountain air. Although we are traveling the same route down, we feel completely different views. We stop at Phakding for lunch and soon after lunch we continue the trail that leads us to Lukla. Along this flat trail, we can enjoy prayer stones, rhododendron and pine forests, prayer flags and in the snow-covered peaks in the distance. We walk through the Sherpa villages noticing impressive faith in Buddhism and culture of prayer stones and prayers flag while we walk through the villages. Upon arrival in Lukla, we stretch those sore legs and recall the experiences of the last couple of weeks. We experience the conclusion of a fantastic trek on a happy note with everyone back safe and sound with a smile on our faces. Overnight in Lukla. Included meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 13

Fly back to Kathmandu: 35 minutes. Time to say our farewells to our amazing support crew they will take our bags to the airport and sort out the formalities allowing you to enjoy your last breakfast in the Khumbu region. Once the aircraft arrives, you can directly board the plane and fly back to Kathmandu. A private vehicle depending on your group size will be awaiting your arrival in the airport. Your guide will then escort you to the hotel. We can rest and relax throughout the day at the hotel and if interested, you can visit some nearby shops or venture out in Thamel to shop for gifts back home. Overnight in Kathmandu. Included meals: Breakfast
