Have you ever peered into a rock pool and wondered what lies within? Turned over a rock and experienced the joy of discovering a scuttling crab? On a bespoke night-time Rock Pool Project safari – your friendly marine biologist will safely guide you and your family to explore the magical world of the rocky shore
at night. They will share their passion and expert knowledge to introduce you to astonishingly diverse wildlife, much of which comes to life once the sun sets. With our UV torches, we will seek glow-in-the-dark anemones, glistening sea snails and bustling crabs, far more active and visible as they hunt at night!
Sessions are suitable for adults and children aged seven and up. Parents must remain fully responsible for their children throughout the session.
Shared sessions available:Save money by sharing a night-time session with another group and buy a shared session ticket covering up to four people.
We can also come to you!There are many brilliant places to rock pool near Plymouth, including the iconic Firestone Bay at Devil's Point and the spectacular Rame Peninsula in South East Cornwall. Your guide can also meet you at a beach which is convenient for you. Check out our

Itinerary- Meet your friendly expert guide
Your safari starts with a warm welcome, safety briefing, demonstration of how to use our UV torches and an introduction to the astonishing night-time ecosystem you are about to investigate.
As you wander down the shore towards the waters edge, you’ll learn fascinating facts and ID skills about the many curious creatures your guide will help you to find.
Once near the water’s edge, at low tide, things get really mesmerising. Species normally only found under the sea can be seen and your guide will teach you how to find them.
- Contribute to our research
Once you are feeling confident, you’ll be able to use our specialist waterproof cameras to record the wildlife you discover, contributing to our citizen science and conservation work! Younger ones can join in to with our exciting Rock Pool Bingo cards whilst enjoying the astonishing light & colour show on display across the rocky shore.

After your experience, and a warm mug of how chocolate back home, we will upload your finds to our system and send you your very own, personal night-time Rock Pool Report as a pdf – the perfect memento of your special evening safari on the rocky shore.

Other - Good footwear. Coastal rocks can be sharp or they can be slippery - even more of a hazard at night. So thick soles with good grips are recommended; wellies are perfect. Old trainers are good too but make sure you rinse the salt off them afterwards.
