Peak Cavern Guided Tours

  • Location Castleton, Hope Valley. Derbyshire

Highlights

Tours are bookable online. To guarantee a tour, we recommend booking in advance of your visit. Subject to availability, unsold online tickets may be purchased at the kiosk 10 minutes before each tour.

The tour itself is through the beautiful subterranean world of the Devil’s Arse. Our professional guides will walk you through the system, re telling the history of the Peak Cavern rope makers. A fascinating 1 hour long tour, witnessing how rope was made for Derbyshire lead miners, followed by a guided walk retelling the folklore of the Victorian tour guides.

The cave is fairly undemanding and suitable for all ages. Please note there is a passage with a low ceiling for about 30 metres where you will have to bend. If you have any concerns we are happy to answer any questions. Please speak to one of our guides at the kiosk or telephone before visiting.

Dog friendly. Well behaved dogs are welcome on a lead.

Dress sensibly. The cave can be wet and muddy in places after rainfall. The temperature is 7°c inside. It will feel cold, the warmer the weather outside.

Unravel the mysteries of the Devil’s Arse and step into the unique world of Peak Cavern. Unusual rock formations, the eerie sound of running water and echoes of a bygone age await you. Set in the middle of the picturesque Peak District village of Castleton, the approach to Peak Cavern is awe inspiring. Deep into the cliffs is the Cavern’s imposing entrance chamber, within which you will see the remains of an ancient village where a whole community lived and worked making ropes for the local lead mines for more than 400 years. Deeper into the Cavern you pass through Lumbago walk and enter the Great Cave, see a perpetual cascade of water at Roger Rains’ House, pass through Pluto’s Dining Room into the Devil’s Cellar and hear the source of the river Styx.

Our tours start promptly at the scheduled time. Please aim to arrive 10 minutes before the start time. Castleton becomes extremely busy at peak times and car parking is limited. Please plan your visit to arrive in plenty of time to find a parking space and walk up to the Cavern. There are no toilet facilities at the Cavern. The nearest public toilets are in the main village car park, behind the Visitor Centre.
