Woodland Conservation at Fingle Woods (walks 1&2)

  • Location Moretonhampstead
  • Price from £35.00

Highlights

For many, Dartmoor is about exploring the sweeping open spaces of the high moor, feeling the wind in your hair and the sun, or rain, on your back. But if you are seeking shade and shelter in the secret wooded valleys where the rivers tumble over smooth granite boulders and ancient woodlands stand in the mists of time, this series of walks is for you. Take time to walk through some of the largest woodland restoration projects in the region, led by an experienced woodland naturalist who is deeply involved in the long-term conservation work in these valleys.

Fingle Woods in the Teign Valley
2 Fingle Walks - 2 absorbing routes - 2 start times
Walks 1&2 - Both walks included with 10am and 1pm start times
The 10am walk takes in magnificent views and visits the river Teign in its rocky gorge. The 1pm walk visits a peaceful area of the woods where some fascinating wildlife studies are going on. You can choose to book either walk or spend the day enjoying both experiences.

Walks in Fingle will cover a multitude of habitats and take you through areas where only a few people go and experience nature taking these woods back. Conservation of woodlands includes the safeguarding of historic features that throw some light on the lives of our ancestors from the Bronze Age, Iron Age and into the early industrial period.
Converting large areas of planted conifers to a more ecologically diverse network of mixed, species rich woodlands is a challenge that will take decades to come to fruition but, during the last few years, these ambitious targets are becoming a reality. More sunlight now reaches the woods where the heavily shading conifers are making way for more broadleaved trees, wildflowers and the native species that are returning to these wild places.
