1 Day Improver's Sea Kayaking Course
If you want the knowledge and skills to venture out alone, then this is the course for you! At the end of the course you should feel confident you have the right information and awareness to plan a short trip along the coast and the tools to create your own adventure in calm weather, on neap tides and gentle winds (1 - 6 mph).
This course focus's on
edging - using your body to steer and reduce drag
technical skills to BCU 2 star in moving water
using the skeg and kayaking in wind (force 2-3)
coastal navigation, meteorology and the tide
reading the water, lines of transit, eddies and protection
trip planning, weather and tide apps
capsize, self-rescue, assisted deep water rescue
bracing techniques to avoid capsize
We will visit a headland to see the differences of tidal movement around an island and what the changes of tidal heights and movement creates.

What's Included
🧰 Equipment - All equipment is provided as well as boats and paddles.
What you'll need
🍴 Food - Lunch and snacks, we may catch something if we fish
🥤 Drink - At least 1 liter of water each
📋 Other - Wear beach clothes if it is over 15 degrees and low winds. If it is under then bring casual layers to go under our semi-dry trousers and jackets. There is a large drysuit that can be borrowed for any wet stuff. However, we do not provide wetsuits. It is so warm in the summer you would be happy for a dip!
Please feel free to bring your own boat, blades or any technical clothing or equipment.
☂️ Waterproofs - If you own a weetuit you may wish to bring it or wear beach clothes in the summer or light layers to go under our waterproof jackets and bring waterproof trousers or gym leggings.
