Highlights
Wild Camping by Sea Kayak
Wild camps are the only way to truly immerse yourself and escape from it all. It is very difficult to leave everything at home, however, once you start to paddle into the remote areas of the Geopark and witness some of the sites of scientific interest, meet some friendly seals, catch your lunch, taste the oils of freshly filleted and cooked fish, whilst listening to the rhythmic song of the sea. It all starts to fade away!
As your blade rushes through the water, you feel the boat bob up and down on the vast ocean beneath you. You witness dramatic rock formations that seem impossible to form peppered with marine sea birds nesting in between the rocky outcrops and ledges. Packed inside the boat is everything you need to stay out under the stars.
We have many hidden pockets around the coast and in our backwaters. Most are tide dependent so our tours are organised with the best tides and moon pattern to give you a real experience whilst in the wild. We will always find our own private beach/campsite and will do our best to fulfill your motivations and desires matched against the conditions and abilities of your group.
A sample tour uses the backwaters of the Dart, that is protected in all conditions and even has its own Folly to explore and sunken pirate ships. Or we can head around the coast to a nature reserve and sleep just off the beach.
We are launching 4 Wild Camping weekends set around the full moon for ease of landing at our highest tide and exploring the inter-tidal zone at our lowest. Tours and spaces are limited however bespoke tours can be arranged, throughout the season with a few weeks notice. Each tour will take advantage of the best conditions and camping grounds and no tour is ever the same.
We can supply camping and technical equipment, from dry bags to thermal inflatable mats for a cosy nights sleep. We recommend you bring your own sleeping bags and go for at least a 3 season. We will attempt to catch and forage our food and we will supply a BBQ for grilling and a beach fire for wild cooking, boiling and toasting marshmallows.
Our wild camps are personalised to the clients motivations and therefore, each camp is a unique experience! Therefore, below is a basic guideline or a wild camp please feel free to call and discuss what you would like to achieve.
Day 1
The launch will be the closest sheltered water to access our chosen campsite, due to the weight of the kayaks once loaded. However, I do supply wheels for ease of moving loaded boats.
On arrival, you will complete the safety brief and paddle demonstration. Followed by a boat loading demonstration as you can fit a lot of gear inside a kayak with some strategic placement of kit.
You will take a tour around the launch location and its sites of specific scientific interest and a journey to a secluded cove where we will stop for lunch. I will bring a BBQ, stove and wood for a campfire so we can have hot drinks, food and refreshments whenever you choose.
We will journey from here to the campsite and set up the tents and unpack the boats. From this point on it is up to you if we explore by boat through the evening sunset or you wish to explore the remoter regions we visit on foot, or relax in your new home. The remote areas are very special and untouched by your average visitor.
You can sit out under the stars by the fire until you wish to retire and start the following day at a time of your choice.
Day 2
The following morning after breakfast you can explore further on foot or relax on the beach until you are ready.
From here you can carry on our journey and stop at a further cove for lunch or refreshment before returning to the launch.
On either day there will be several opportunities for coasteering, kayak fishing, wild cave swimming and swimming from the beaches along with amazing rock pooling and marine foraging.
We will not travel far on day 2 but we can always add to the itinerary if you are a more physical group as it is easy to see a lot within a short distance due to the changing geology at every cove.
Our basic itineraries are a guide and we can always do more if your group desires. We are mobile so we can travel anywhere in Devon should you wish to launch fro another location and explore a different coastline or estuary.
