Highlights

A Derwent Valley Tours Walk!
A 4 mile circular walk starting with a steep climb up to the Tarmac works of Dene Quarry. Recorded as a marble quarry in 1811, the present limestone quarry opened in 1942, initially to manufacture agricultural limestone dust and decorative stone. From 1956 it passed through a number of hands to become Tarmac as a significant aggregates producer from the 1960s. Two types of stone were marketed: Derbyshire fossil – a brownish grey limestone packed with fossil crinoids fragments and Hadene stone, a finer grained creamy fawn stone with similarities to Hopton Wood Stone. The walk takes you around the quarry perimeter to look down into the workings. The return is via farmland, Slinter Wood and Cromford Market Place.
