Adventure Details

Day 1

Start time 09:00

This hostel affords a fantastic view of Whitby Abbey and the sea, and you’ll soon be getting to know your fellow walking companions over a cup of tea.
We’ll be heading out to dinner at around 8pm, so let us know if you plan on arriving after this time. Dinner will be in town, at one of the fantastic local fish and chip restaurants.

Day 2

To make the most of the coastline, our ‘plan A’ is to get bussed out to Staithes and to walk the 10 miles back to Whitby along the coastal trail, which also forms part of the Cleveland Way.
On the route, besides fantastic views of the North Sea and the local wildlife, we’ll pass Runswick Bay, Kettle Ness and the Whitby Sands, all the time looking out for fossils hidden in the rocks. There are a few ups and downs, mixed in with long stretches of relatively flat walking along the cliff-tops. As it’s the Cleveland Way, the trail is well-made, giving us ample time to enjoy looking at the scenery.
Once back at the hostel in Whitby, perhaps after popping into a pub or two and exploring the Whitby waterfront, there will be lots of time to freshen up and relax with a drink before we head out for the evening meal. We’ll walk back into town and head to a local pub, to really get into the local atmosphere.

Day 3

For today’s walk we’ll be heading the other direction, taking the path along the cliff-tops south of Whitby the 6.5 miles to Robin Hood’s Bay. This is an easy walk, mostly staying high on the cliffs with endless views over the sea, passing Saltwick Bay and Ness Point on the way to the famous smuggling haunt, supposedly where Robin Hood and the merry men retired!
Once in the village, we’ll find a café for lunch and then have some time to look around. Then the choice is yours, either get the bus back to Whitby for early afternoon finish or wander back along the abandoned railway line to make it a longer day out.
