Adventure Highlights

This is the perfect chance to see the wilder side of the Lake District, all in the company of a small group and an experienced leader. We’ll be spending two days walking in the western fells, and spending a night at one of the few hostels not accessible by road, the spectacularly positioned and remote Black Sail, in Ennerdale. Our two full days of walking will include the summits of some of the fells, with options to shorten or extend the day depending on the weather and how the group are finding it. Our ‘Plan A’ will be to start in the village of Buttermere (easily accessible from Keswick), and head up and along the High Stile ridge, a grassy wander that stays high for some time, allowing fantastic views all the way from Scafell Pike to St Bees Head. Beyond this ridge, we can either continue onto Haystacks, or drop straight down into Ennerdale for a welcome cup of tea in Black Sail. It’s worth remembering that we’ll be far from any road, in England’s remotest hostel – why not head out after dark to look at the stars, or to watch sunset down the valley, relaxing with a glass of wine. Ennerdale is in the process of rewilding, so it’s likely we’ll see wildlife. There have been over 100 bird species recorded in the valley! On Sunday our main goal is Great Gable, which rises at the head of the valley and is one of the most impressive Lake District peaks. From the summit, we’ll continue past Green Gable to the hills around Honister, before dropping back down to Buttermere. This day also has options to extend or shorten the route. All in all, this is an excellent chance to see the ‘wild west’ of the Lakes without worrying about navigation or accommodation; we’ve got it all sorted!

This adventure is perfect for individuals and small groups, and can be tailored for:

  • Corporates
  • Families
  • Hen / Stag parties
  • School groups

Day 1

Start time 09:00

You’ll meet your leader and the rest of the group in Buttermere at 09:30am, where we’ll run through the plan and the weather, and then set off! The pace will be one everyone can manage; this is definitely a walk for those who like to look around and take photos.
Please note that Black Sail hostel will be providing our meals (evening meal, breakfast and packed lunch for Sunday, and they have alcohol available to buy). You’ll need to bring packed lunch for Saturday, as well as any snacks you’ll want for the 2 days. They provide bedding, but not towels. You will want to bring toiletries and a towel in your walking bag.

Day 2

After breakfast we’ll head back out into Ennerdale, and depending on the weather, head for Great Gable and another fantastic walk. Don’t worry, there are also fine options for bad weather days.
We aim to be out for the whole day and return to Buttermere for 3-4pm, where we suggest a final tea and cake at the café/pub before heading off!

End time 17:00
