Treak Cliff Cavern is an Underground Wonderland of stalactites and stalagmites, rocks, minerals and fossils, and Home to the unique Blue John Stone!
With an App previously downloaded onto your Smart phone, you follow a marked route through the cavern, with the information delivered to your phone via Blue tooth beacons as you move along. Entry times and online booking limit slots to your group only, so you can be socially distanced, enabling you to take your time to stop, listen, see and enjoy the underground around you!
The commentary lasts around 50 minutes so take your time to make the most of your visit. As you come out of the Cavern the view of Castleton and the Hope Valley stretches for 10 miles in front of you.
Our small museum houses a wealth of historic Blue John Stone treasures collected by the owners, and displayed at Treak Cliff Cavern for everyone to enjoy. Discover more about the formation, discovery and history of the Cavern and the family who care for it today.
You can try your hand at polishing your own piece of Blue John Stone helped by our craftsmen, browse our shop to choose Blue John jewellery, and items made in our onsite workshops, or choose rocks and minerals from all over the world! Our Cafe on the Cliff can only serve takeaway drinks and snacks at present due to the Covid 19 regulations, and is open at weekends at present, (and daily October Half Term holiday only).
We’re located on the side of a steep hill with steps and steep slopes up and down, which makes for stunning views if you are willing to make the effort. There is NO WHEELCHAIR access to the cavern entrance or inside the Cavern itself due to the natural contours of our location. Some areas of the cavern are low and narrow, all areas are lit, the temperature is 11 degrees centigrade and water drips from the ceiling, but its all part of your Cavern Experience!
You can incorporate a visit to us on the way to or from the amazing mountain of Mam Tor, with the Ridge Walk and the old Broken Road. Our local village of Castleton is just 1 mile away, with Peveril Castle, shops and amenities, plus the Peak District National Park Visitor Centre & museum.
Children under 5 are FREE and do not need to have tickets. Dogs are welcome everywhere on a lead, including the cavern and the shop. At least one adult (18+) MUST be present for insurance policies, so please only book if there is an adult in your party. We look forward to welcoming you!
