This is a Self guided audio tour of Treak Cliff Cavern using your own Smartphone, with a Christmas seasonal twist combined with workshop time with our Craftsmen to make a Blue John Christmas decoration. The cavern is decorated with fairy lights, Christmas trees, and candles, with a little history of Christmas Customs and origins. Rocks and minerals from around the world are incorporated into the decorations to create even more Festive Feel, including a giant fossil and sparkly minerals, with Fairy lights shining through them!
The Christmas Rocks Trail focuses on the decorations and the minerals as you take your journey through the Cavern. For this you receive your own Quiz Sheet and pencil, and the correct answers can be discovered from our friendly staff in the entrance area after your tour!
The self-guided Audio on your own smartphone takes you on the Tour of the Cavern, and you can stop and start as you go along to answer the Christmas Rocks Trail quiz. You will see the Underground Wonderland of stalactites and stalagmites, rocks, minerals and fossils, and our beautiful unique Blue John Stone!
With an App previously downloaded onto your Smart phone, you follow a marked route through the cavern, with the information delivered to your phone via Blue tooth beacons as you move along.
Our tours are designed to meet the new Good To Go standard introduced by Visit Britain after the Corona-virus lock-down. Entry times and online booking limit slots to your group only (not counting those who are exempt or in your Support bubble), so you effectively have a socially distanced private tour. enabling you to focus on the stunning cave and the audio tour, and the Christmas lights and themes. The walking tour lasts around 1 hour and you can stop, take photographs and gaze at the rocks around you !!
This Experience includes time in the work shop where the crafts people will help you select a semi prepared piece of Blue John Stone and help you finish it into a hanging Christmas decoration.
Be aware we are on a steep hillside so there is no wheelchair access to or inside the Cavern, and some areas underground are low and narrow.
The Audio tour is timed at about 45 minutes but you can spend longer or shorter time underground if you wish,. The Christmas Rocks Trail unfolds visually with the Audio Tour, so this may take you a little longer, Once you are Underground there is no rush as there is plenty of space to Socially Distance, and to pass other groups if necessary. On your return to the Cavern buildings the craftsmen will help you select a semi prepared slice of Blue John Stone for your Christmas decoration. They will show you how to rub it with different grades of abrasive paper until ready for the final stage, and supervise while you polish it to a lovely shine, glue a bail to the top, then add a string to hang it up with.
Also at the Entrance area you can enjoy our free museum, where our collection of antique Blue John treasures is displayed. and learn more about the formation, history and discovery of Treak Cliff Cavern and the family who care for it.
Our gift shop at the entrance area has lots of Blue John jewellery, and mineral specimens mined, processed and manufactured here onsite in our workshops. There are rocks and minerals from all over the world to choose from too.!
