Highlights

British Canoeing Sea Kayak Leader Training
Is this for you?
Do you have experience in a sea kayak? Do you have the ability to roll a sea kayak in moderate conditions? Are you already an independent sea kayaker who would like to share your passion with other kayakers? Are you an outdoor instructor looking to expand your range of qualifications or hoping to confidently look after friends when on the sea? Do you already hold the British Canoeing Sea Kayak Award, Coastal Sea Kayak Award or paddling at that level? Would you like the choice of: two, three or four-day Sea Kayak Leader Training courses?
What to expect…
A one day, classroom based course, followed by subsequent days on the water. Practical days will include personal skills, leadership, improvised rescues and navigation skills and more. These form the basis of the course which can then be built upon specific to the needs of the participants.
We will cover…
This is the highest leadership award that British Canoeing offers and is intended for paddlers who journey on the sea in areas where tidal races, headlands, open crossings, swell and challenging coastlines will be encountered. The Open Water Navigation and Tidal Planning (O.W.N.T.P.) course is a classroom-based day traditionally taught before heading out onto the water. In addition to personal skills, group leadership and rescues, this allows students put into practice their planning skills and on-water navigation throughout the remainder of the course. Poor visibility and night navigation will also be covered as part of the training, feedback and a detailed action plan will be discussed with the coaches once training is complete.  Without agenda, we recommend and frequently observe the 5- day course to be the most beneficial for our trainees. With feedback, participants feel this allows more time to cover the large and diverse syllabus, plus the opportunity to practice under the guidance of their coaches. Specific areas and skills you wish to develop may be revisited and discussed at greater lengths. At the end of the course, trainees will have opportunity to complete a personalised action plan with their coaches. This provides an opportunity to discuss areas that may require further attention and ideas and methods to take away. The full syllabus and guidance notes can be found at the BC website.
