For our second walk about the Battle of Byland we set off from Sutton Bank then head down to Gormire Lake and towards Hood Hill, following the route taken by a detachment of the Scottish army aiming to circle round and catch the English defenders of Sutton Bank. As our return route goes up Roulston Scar hear how they went via a steep gully named ‘Hell Hole’ and a spot still known today as ‘Scotch Corner’.
