Peak Cavern is an excellent venue for educational visits.
Which groups do you cater for and when are tours available?
We cater for all age ranges from Key Stage 1 through to GNVQ level. Special rates are offered for pre-booked groups (Minimum group size 20 persons. Available only Monday-Friday during regular term time).
How long are the tours and what is included?
We suggest allowing 1 hour and 15 minutes for your visit, which is taken in two parts: a ropemaking demonstration, detailing the social and industrial heritage of the cave entrance, where we involve the students in helping to make a rope, which is then presented to the group to take back to school. The second part is a tour of the inner showcave, which is a classic natural water-formed limestone cavern.
Tours are tailored to meet the needs and abilities of the various age groups, and we can place particular emphasis on any particular features you may be teaching at the time. Please call to discuss your specific needs.
Is the Cavern and tour suitable for all?
Wheelchair access is no problem up to the cavern entrance and ropewalks. Unfortunately due to the nature of the cave system, it isn't possible to accommodate wheelchairs beyond the ropewalks.
Special needs pupils can usually be accommodated, but please call in advance to discuss individual cases.
The cave tour is a walking tour and in places there are low points, steps and uneven surfaces.
To have the best experience we recommend groups of more than 35 split in to two tours. We have various suggestions on how to work this. Give us a call to discuss.
Do you have toilet facilities?
Unfortunately we have no mains water supply here so are unable to offer toilet facilities. We recommend you allow time for toilet breaks at the main visitor centre in the village before walking up to the cavern.
Peak Cavern has a large undercover seating area for groups to use as a picnic area on wet days.
Do we have risk assessments and PL insurance?
We have a small gift shop selling various souvenirs from pencils, pens and rope, through to fossils, gemstones ,beanies, snoods and water bottles
