A guided mountain walk, suitable for individuals, couples or small groups of up to five people with your own personal guide for the day. Whernside is one of the famous 'Yorkshire 3 Peaks' and is the highest mountain in the Yorkshire Dales National Park.

Day 1

After meeting in the car parking layby, we'll initially follow the official route of the Yorkshire 3 Peaks Challenge onto the summit of Whernside standing at 736 metres above sea level. This is the highest mountain in the Yorkshire Dales National Park, and is at the county boundary with Cumbria. We'll then descend gradually down a broad grassy ridge over High Pike and West Fell, before joining part of the long distance Dales High Way footpath, then onto other paths back to Ribblehead.
The walk is about 11 miles/18km with approx 570 metres of ascent. Good hiking boots are essential as well as outdoor clothing.

    What you'll need

  • Warm Clothing Please wear clothing appropriate to the time of year and weather, plus at least one spare fleece, jumper, down, or synthetic down jacket that you don't plan to wear should be carried in a waterproof bag in your rucksack.
  • Waterproofs It's essential that you bring a good quality waterproof jacket and trousers (made of Gortex, eVent fabric, or similar), except in exceptionally warm and dry summer conditions.
  • Food Please bring a packed lunch and snacks for our morning and afternoon breaks.
  • Drink Bring at least a litre of water or other drinks per person. You may need more it it's a warm day. In cold weather a flask containing a hot drink is a good idea.
  • Other Hiking boots that are waterproof and that have good grip on the soles. Warm hat. Gloves. Small personal first aid kit. Hand Sanitiser. Face covering (in case needed), You might also like to consider bringing: Sun screen; gaiters (if likely to be wet); small light weight sit-mat; walking poles; sunglasses; sun hat; camera; small binoculars.
