Wessex Airscapes Walk Experience - The Ridgeway & Lowbury Hill

  • Location Berkshire Downs
  • Price from £20.00

Highlights

This amazing walk is in association with the renowned artist Anna Dillon and aerial landscape photographer Hedley Thorne.  Walk into their world and discover the historic landscape of the North Wessex Downs which is the inspiration for their work.

The Walk:
Our walk starts out along the ancient Ridgeway (National Trail) from Streatley.  Historic downland tracks and paths, tramped by our ancestors, lead us up onto the North Wessex (Berkshire) Downs.  We take time to explore Lowbury Hill and the Battle of Ashdown before returning via Starveall and Streatley Warren.  This is a walk of billowy Downs, sweeping coombs and awesome panoramic views.  Along the way we take time to discover the rich landscape steeped in history from the prehistoric Ridgeway, a Roman Temple, a Saxon Battle and a mediaeval rabbit warren!  The chalk hills are adorned with wild flowers and home to hares, skylarks, yellowhammers and curlew.

What will it be like:
  • 6.5 miles / 10.5 km
  • Approx. 4 hrs
  • A fairly strenuous walk at a moderate pace with stops for interest and photo's along the way
  • Mainly established good paths and tracks but rutted and rough in places and can be muddy after rain
  • Total ascent 600 ft / 180 m - one long ascent and some undulation
  • Open downland exposed to weather (sun, rain, wind)
  • No facilities on route. We will plan a mid-walk snack break.

Can I bring my dog? Sorry, dogs are not permitted on this walk.
