This is a guided walk with wilderness and history, visiting the 1948 crash site of a US Superfortress bomber and the summit of Derbyshire's second highest plateau. During the walk your guide will share the plane's history in a wild and rugged environment with ancient peat land, heather and mountain hares.

The walk begins in Old Glossop and follows a packhorse route before climbing up onto Higher Shelf Stones, Bleaklow's high southern edge with wind carved stones overlooking Snake Pass and Kinder Scout. Your guide will take you to the site of the B-29 Superfortress, 'Over Exposed', recounting the tale of the air crash on 3 November 1948, when the USAF aircraft struck Bleaklow in mist. Remnants of the aircraft's engines, undercarriage and wings remain, alongside a memorial to the 13 souls who tragically lost their lives.

The walk continues up the historic Pennine Way to Bleaklow Head at over 2,000 feet and our summit cairn. On a clear day, you’ll continue with a beautiful 'walk on the wild side', looking for mountain hares amongst the heather. The route follows a stunning high level track above Dowstone Clough overlooking Yellowstone Brook, 150 feet below. A final stroll down through green pastures returns you to your starting point.

The distance of this guided walk is about 9 miles/17 kilometres with a height gain of 2,247 feet/685 metres.
