USAF Boeing B-29 Superfortress Overexposed Bleaklow is the setting for the most impressive crash site in the Peak District. Bleaklow is the second highest mountain in the Peaks and the location of some of its wildest countryside. Here you will have the opportunity to learn from your guide about the special moorland ecology and it's conservation. If you have an interest in navigation your guide will happily share some skills and you could even try navigating the group across a section of the notoriously complex Bleaklow moor! The B-29 Superfortress crash site is an extensive area of wreckage from a USAF Boeing reconnaissance plane nick-named “Over Exposed” which crashed on November 3rd 1948. This plane is famous for having filmed the first two Bikini Atoll atom bomb tests in July 1946 and it's involvement in relieving the West Berlin Blockade in 1948. After the Superfortress we will usually visit a nearby Lancaster Bomber site. This was a Mk.X, RCAF Lancaster and there is a memorial here to the Canadian crew.
Below are a few other suggestions for crash sites in the local area which I could plan into your itinerary depending on your interest and how far you would like to walk.
RAF Defiant Night Fighter This is one of the lesser visited crash sites on Bleaklow, providing another great option for a full day tour. It can be combined with both of the crash sites listed above or just the Superfortress.
USAAF B24 Liberator This is another fairly extensive crash site on the lower flanks of Kinder Scout and provides a great option for a longer full day walk when combined with the Superfortress, or a half day walk from a number of locations.
Other crash sites which can be included in the walk, or as separate trips at various nearby locations, include a Halifax Bomber, 2 Sabres, Dakota and a Dragon Rapide.

Itinerary

The walk will be on a mixture of good tracks and some smaller footpaths which are rough in places. There will also be some sections on open moorland away from any paths. At any time of year there are likely to be some wet and muddy sections, especially on Bleaklow and Kinder Scout with their peat bogs. As, at times we will be leaving the paths and walking across rougher ground as we head to the crash sites, walking boots providing ankle support and keeping your feet dry are strongly recommended.
The walk will vary in length depending on which locations you wish to include. We will discuss and agree this with you. As a general guide it can be anything between a short 8km / 5miles and a more challenging 25km / 15miles. There are also a number of different locations where we could start the walk from such as the Snake Pass, Old Glossop or Hayfield. Some of the routes could include a fairly long hill of around 350m / 1200ft but there are also other less hilly options.
National Park Experiences is a curated collection that brings the stories of our National Parks to life. Each experience offers an authentic insight into the landscape and special qualities of a National Park.
