Would you like to have the skills to hike for a day in the hills and be confident with your ability to navigate using a map & compass? This one-day course will assist you to learn basic navigation abilities, using maps, interpreting scales, contours, and how to monitor where you are. To demystify the art of navigation and create confidence, we use a range of maps and fun exercises. This one-day course can be combined with our one-day advanced navigation course to give you the skills and confidence to go independently and not rely on others.

1 DAY | RATIO 1:6 | £90.00 DETAILED INFO AIMS There is no need for any prior hill walking, mountain or navigation experience, although it would be helpful to experience some summer hill walking and familiarise yourself with paper based OS maps.. Our primary focus is on using a map and compass and the related navigation abilities in while out on the hill. Depending on the conditions and group ambitions, each day is slightly varied, but we will cover all the key methods needed for confident mountain and hill navigation in summer circumstances.
PRE-REQUISITES Fitness for a day of hill walking.
No prior experience of hill walking, mountain or navigation, although it would be helpful to experience some summer hill walking and familiarity with a paper based OS Map.
CONTENT The day is usually spent using a variety of maps and build the map setting basics, follow a route and introduce the compass.
Using a map scale from 1 cm to 50 m, we can initially provide a fun and quick learning experience with plenty of chance to experiment without worrying about the weather and conditions on the hill.
Effective use of the compass needs other abilities such as taking bearings, practising pacing and timing to assist you keep track of your location and relocation abilities if you become misplaced.
Route planning, from guidebooks, maps and weather data and how quickly you walk should assist you make sound choices when planning your hill days. Understanding the weather forecast and understanding its impact on your trip is often critical to enjoying a day in the hills, so we integrate it into the day's planning.
Our one-day course starts at 09.00, if you'd like to arrive by 0830 this allows us to ensure there's no loss of teaching time. Please make sure you wear appropriate clothes and take appropriate food and water on the hills for the day - please read below the suggested kit list. We will end the day with a review and aim to be finished by 5pm at the latest.
WHAT WILL I NEED? We only supply instruction for the course, it does not include transport or personal equipment. Your instructor will want to check that personal equipment is appropriate for the activity. Listed below are the essentials;

Map information – we encourage everyone on Climb Devon summer navigation & skill courses to have a map covering Dartmoor National Park. OS map OL28 1:25 000 covers the areas we use and is the recommended map for our courses - other scales will be discussed on the course. Please ensure that this is a weather proof active map or you have a map case. For courses in other locations please contact us regarding map information.

Custom Policy

  1. Amendments by the Customer

2.1 Substitution of the original customer for another can be made provided at least 2 weeks’ notice is given by the substituted customer to Climb Devon and the substituting customer satisfies the requirement of the course. All substitutions must be made with the consent of Climb Devon.
2.2 A customer may apply, in writing, to change course or course dates as long as the original booking is more than 2 weeks from the date of the request.
2.3 Any requests to change course or course dates within the 2 week period will be dealt with under the terms and conditions relating to cancellation by the customer.
Cancellation by the Customer
3.1 All cancellations must be in writing and acknowledged by Climb Devon. The financial cost of cancellation is as follows:
3.2 25% of the total course fee is due where cancellation takes place more than 4 weeks before the commencement of the course; or
3.3 75% of the total course fee is due where cancellation takes place less than 2 weeks but more than 2 weeks before the commencement of the course; or
3.4 100% of the total course fee is due where cancellation takes place within the period of 1 – 14 days before the commencement date of the course; or
3.5 100% of the total course fee is due where cancellation takes place on or after the commencement date of the course.
