Test your metal in the Scottish winter wonderland, build a snow hole and climb a snow gully! Learn the skills you need to explore and experience Winter mountain walking in safety and confidence in the wild and beautiful Cairngorm mountains. Skills include walking on snow, use of an Ice Axe and Crampons and how to navigate in Winter conditions so that you can enjoy the freedom of being in the mountains. We will also build and sleep in a snow hole! Our highly qualified and experienced instructor will deliver the course in a relaxed fashion giving you the skills to walk in the wintery mountains safely and confidently. The walking Three full days of walking and practical navigation in the beautiful Cairngorms. We will cover about 15km each day and bivvi out in a snow hole in the mountains on Sunday night. You will carry all your kit with you including sleeping equipment so your pack will weigh about 12kg. Navigation skills form the foundation of all journeys into the wild and open the door to the freedom of being in nature. The skills that will be taught during this course include: Route planning and timing Interpreting contours and aspect of slope. Navigating in poor visibility. Use of the compass Re-orientating yourself if you do get lost Navigating and movement over steep ground Weather and how the weather affects route planning Emergency procedures Possible winter gully climbing

Adventure Details

Day 1

Start time 09:00

Start point at Aviemore train station at 9.00am. The Caledonian Sleeper service is a good travel option from London as it arrives at Aviemore at 7.40am on Saturday and leaves at 21.34pm on Monday. https://www.sleeper.scot/ Explore the Caingorms mountain range, walk around 15km whilst carrying all of your own kit (including sleeping kit, which in total can add up to around 12kg). Learn the skills you need to explore and experience Winter mountain walking in safety and confidence in the wild and beautiful Cairngorm mountains. Skills include walking on snow, use of an Ice Axe and Crampons and how to navigate in Winter conditions so that you can enjoy the freedom of being in the mountains. On the night sleep in a heated Tipi at Badaguish Outdoor centre in the heart of the Scottish Cairngorms https://www.badaguish.org/ with showers and drying rooms.

Day 2

Spend the day exploring the stunning white vast landscape of the caingorms and picking up new winter mountain skills. You'll cover another 15km in the snow and rough terrain whilst carrying your backpack with sleeping equipment which will weigh around 12kg. Spend one hour digging your hole that you'll sleep in for the night, which will capture your body heat and enable you to sleep.

Day 3

Cover another 15km, head back to civilisation, having practised key mountain skills and had an epic adventure doing so!

Inclusions

No-frills Accommodation

The course structure includes one night in a heated Tipi at Badaguish Outdoor centre in the heart of the Scottish Cairngorms https://www.badaguish.org/ with showers and drying rooms. The second night will be spent in a snow hole that will be excavated by us. This will require about an hour of digging per person.

  • Food All food is provided from lunch on Saturday through to lunch on Monday. This is mountain food which will be provided by us and prepared by the group. Dinner on Monday evening will be a well deserved meal in a pub. The pub meal is not included in the price.
  • Equipment All camping equipment is provided: Heated Tipi Sleeping bag and Mattress

What you'll need to bring

  • Other What to bring and what to wear: Winter mountain boots Waterproof Jacket and Pants Warm, quick drying clothing in layers Spare thermals and a hat to sleep in. Balaclava and sunglasses/goggles. Rucksack Head torch Crampons Ice Axe or 50cm walkers axe. Water bottle We have a selection of kit to hire please get in touch if you need any. Course pre-requisites A good level of fitness level is required and experience of walking and wild camping in the British mountains in Summer time. You will need to be able to walk at 3km an hour with a loaded pack. If you need any clarification about this do get in touch!

Cancelling less than 30 days before results in no refund.

Refund excludes processing fees. Alternate dates may be able to be agreed at no additional cost, but this is not guaranteed.
